Garden Hedges
Willows make excellent garden hedges in small and large gardens. Early catkins, attractive leaves and colouful winter stems ensure a varied and attractive appearance throughout the seasons. They will respond well to trimming and can be kept to a required height and thickness. They can even be cut ( or harvested ) once a year to provide a crop of rods for craft use in the home or school. A willow hedge is also an excellent addition to a wildlife garden providing valuable habitat for beneficial insects and birds and a wildlife corridor for small mammals. They are quick and easy to establish from cuttings. Simply strim any weeds, cover with a weed suppressing mulch mat and make holes in the soil with a bar. Plant the cuttings and firm the soil with your heel. Several varieties are good for garden hedges including Flanders red, Purpurea, Triandra, Vitellina, Harrisons Seedling B and Sarda |

Spacings
A double row of 2ft cuttings, 25cm apart, planted through a 0.5m wide mulch mat will establish and grow quickly, usually reaching 6ft or more in the first growing season.

NO DIGGING !!
Make a hole in the ground with a metal bar, insert the willow cutting and firm with your heel.
As easy as that! |

Windbreaks
Willows are the windbreak plant par excellence. Traditionally grown around orchards and smallholdings, they can reduce windspeeds by as much as 60% even in the winter, providing shelter for stock, plants and people alike. “Super Willow” variety Viminalis will even tolerate very harsh conditions such as high altitude and coastal areas. They will typically grow 6ft or more in the first year and often reach 16ft or more by the third year. Ultimate height will be approx 25 to 30ft, or they can be trimmed to the height required.
Spacings
A double row of 2ft cuttings at 50cm between plants and rows through a 1m wide mulch mat makes a good start to a windbreak. |
Pollinate your Fruits
Willow hedges and windbreaks are particularly useful around fruit and veg gardens not only for their shelter but also because they flower early in the season attracting pollinating insects which are then only too happy to move on to pollinating the fruit and veg. For this reason they are also good for honey bees. |

To mulch or not to mulch ?
Willow, like any other plant, will establish & grow more vigorously with no competition for nutrients, water & light from weeds (including grass).
A woven mulch mat will allow water to penetrate to the willow roots and at the same time suppress weed competition.
You will always get significantly better results from a small cutting in weed free conditions than a larger cutting in weedy conditions. |
